FAQs
Q.
Where should I stay?
A.
There are several very nice resorts all along the East Cape. These include Hotel Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles, Hotel Buena Vista in Buena Vista, Hotel Rancho Leonaro, and Hotel Punta Colorada. These resort hotels have pools, restaurants, bars, and can easily set you up for whatever you want to do, including fishing, kayaking, sight seeing, snorkeling, whale watching, hiking, and more. I think they are all good hotels, and all are different, but great in their own way.
If hotel living is not for you, you can always rent a house. This website, Baja Vacation, is very helpful if you want to rent a house:

No matter where you stay on the East Cape, you will have a tremendous view of the beautiful Sea of Cortez. Enjoy!
Q.
What is the best form of transportation?
A.
The best way to get around is to rent your own car. That way you have wheels when you need them. You can rent cars easily at Los Cabos airport. Mex 1, the main highway, is easy to drive, well paved, and takes you to La Ribera, Buena Vista and Los Barriles easily. Just be careful driving at night because cattle are free-range in Baja Sur, and they often will cross the highway.
If you don't want to drive, you can easily take a taxi. There are local taxis that service the hotels and they can also drive you where you want to go. Let us know and we can help you book a taxi!
Q.
What is the best time of the year to go fishing on the East Cape?
A.
Fishing is excellent all year long. But, the weather also has to cooperate if you want to really enjoy yourself! The best fishing weather begins in March, after the North Winds die down, and the weather warms. March-April-May are a great time to catch dorado and striped marlin. As the water gets warmer, into summer, the months of June-July-August give you a great chance to catch yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, sailfish, and black marlin. September is a terrific time to fish, but it is also "chubasco" season, or hurricane season. You'll need to watch the weather report, as Pacific hurricanes are tracked for days and weeks before they come close, so you can plan your trip accordingly. October and November are outstanding for "big blues" which are the bigger blue marlin. You also have a chance to catch a black marlin at that time of the year. December-January-February are beautiful months, but they can be windy. "El Norte" or the North Wind can happen. When the North Winds come, the water can get rough. You can still get out fishing, and there are certainly calm periods in between. Hiking and sight seeing are also excellent during the December to February time period. Finally, you can catch most species of smaller fish all year long. These include sierra, pargo (snapper), cabrilla (grouper), pezgallo (roosterfish), and others.
Q.
What kind of fish can I catch on the East Cape?
A.
You can catch big game pelagic species such as yellowfin tuna, dorado, striped marlin, blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, and mako shark. You can also catch bottom fish such as red snapper and grouper (known locally as pargo and cabrilla respectively). For sport, you can troll along the beaches for roosterfish (known locally as pezgallo), and jack crevalle.
